Tech took the hit Monday while the Dow quietly notched a record, and futures are screaming higher this morning on Iran peace-deal optimism.
Yesterday's Scorecard
| Index | Close | Change |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | 7,472.79 | -0.37% |
| Nasdaq Composite | 26,166.60 | -1.32% |
| Dow Jones | 51,712.71 | +0.29% |
What Happened
Big Tech got hit hard. Alphabet sank roughly 6% while Amazon, Meta, and Palantir each fell around 4%, as investors grew nervous about ballooning AI capital spending. Palantir's slide was compounded by news that France's domestic intelligence service plans to drop the company's AI and data tools, raising fresh questions about its government contract pipeline.
Chips kept ripping. Even as the Nasdaq slumped, semiconductor names bucked the trend — Micron and Sandisk both added around 5% — extending a historic rally that has Micron up more than 250% year-to-date heading into its earnings report later this week.
Iran headlines moved oil and sentiment. Reports of "encouraging progress" in U.S.-Iran negotiations, with both sides reportedly agreeing to work toward a deal within two months, pushed oil prices lower and gave equities a tailwind into the close. Brent crude has now retreated sharply from its conflict-era highs.
The Fed is still the wildcard. Lingering hawkish signals from last week's Fed commentary kept a lid on Treasuries and tempered what might otherwise have been a stronger tape, with traders still digesting how sticky inflation could shape the rate path ahead.
Today's Game Plan
Futures Right Now
Futures are pointing to a sharply higher open: S&P 500 E-mini futures are up about 0.98% and Nasdaq 100 futures are up roughly 1.64% in pre-market trading. The move suggests yesterday's tech-led pullback could reverse quickly, with Iran de-escalation optimism doing most of the heavy lifting overnight.
